freedom's just another word

Statistics can be manipulated, used to show the outcomes you want them to show. And like most news and televised bits of information, we see only what we are meant to see, not the full picture or the whole story. Lately, despite the full blown media coverage of well, everything, I feel like I’m not getting the full story. Am I paranoid?

I recently re-read 1984 which was a book I found fascinating when I was a . It still is fascinating and the fact that it was written as a warning for the world back then and is still a warning for the world now, gives me the creeps.

Today we (not me and you we, but they we) can, and do, control what people see and hear every day. People are in constant communication all day, every day. Hell, the people in my homeless shelters had cell phones, some supplied by the state, for free. Interesting that. You can get one at the 24 hour store for less than 20 bucks.

Take a walk through your neighborhood. Count the cameras. Every notice how many there are? There is one at the bottom of my street which is a residential neighborhood. Why?

Until a year ago I did not have a cell phone. Work required it. I fought it. They won. My ex-husband has no cell phone, no computer, no Roku, but he did cave to cable so he could get sports. Lol. I still use my computer more like a typewriter than anything else. I don’t surf the web…..I’d drown.

And I wonder every time I buy something using a credit card, just how much data is being gathered on me.

When my bought me a kindle I was so upset. I love the heft of a book in my hands. But my book habit was so expensive………so now I only buy the books I MUST HAVE FOREVER and the crap I read to put myself to sleep I read on my kindle. I feel like a traitor to writers everywhere.

One would suppose that in this world of being so seen there would be less crime, but instead there is more. Maybe people don’t like being the rat in the maze. Sighs…I know, this post makes little sense. It’s just me feeling ticked off by the idea of being “unfree” , watched, people being labelled, all of it.

Cameras on cops and in the halls of government…..now these may be the only places that I really want cameras. Cameras on the people who are supposed to be protecting us and making our laws. Because, if they’re doing what they should be doing….then we should all be safe, right?

And free……..

Yup, I want to be free

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

I have a kindle but I still miss the feel of a real book with pages I could flip through...and skip to the end if I wanted. It's convenient to carry hundreds of books in one hand, but I'm old fashioned enough to miss the real thing...
Big Brother definitely has his eye on all of us. We're like bugs under a microscope.

I"m beginning to think there's this collective of thoughts in my head that came from reading your blog at different points throughout the years.

I prefer to be free, I do everything in my power to be free, and I strive to be free.

However, I love technology with a passion.

Couple of tips I've picked up?

Get a prepaid visa to buy things online. Those ones you can buy at Walgreens? Like Green Dot? They're perfect for protecting your privacy and your money from hackers because you put in a predetermined amount, and that's all there is.

Prepaid cell phones and google voice both offer options to keep your number "off the grid"

Turn off your gps on your phone when you're not using it.

The cameras? Hell, I don't know, those fuckers are everywhere and I'm feeling less and less like I live in a Free Country and More and More like I live in a Communist one.

You all should see how much time I spend out in my shed, and I have a piece of paper taped over my laptop camera because I've become paranoid since I was hacked last month.

Live life to it's fullest!

If you're bored, Read

what's that quote?

just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you?

Cameras only verify what we have pretty much already known but kinda refused to believe. If you think about it in regards to how many there are on the planet.Digital photography is an ideal medium for catching everything people do because of its size. You may see cameras but those are already outdated.
Cell phones are what we should be worrying about. They not only tell where you are at any given time they can be accessed and record any phone messages as well as any conversation you are having at that time.It wasn't the government that forced this technology on us.It was our own stupidity to go after the next best thing with a hunger that has never been seen before.
O k the electric pencil sharpener was first.

Cameras do deter people especially the ones they're supposed to deter, the criminal element.I hate to say it but do you remember when T V s were switched to digital and you could get a converter box coupon to two and save 80 bucks.Like most homes there is the t v in the bedroom and one in the family room.Who's to say there isn't some sort of recording system.
all I am trying to say is that it seems rather ironic that our governments would install cameras in our homes. When we are gladly letting them know where we are, what we're doing and what we're saying. We fall for this shit without a thought.Blame the Jone's next door.Since our current culture is to at least have what they have. That false sense of reality.

Great blog, because I too reread 1984 a few months ago for the very same reason and realized we are the disillusioned cattle that have only ourselves to blame. We have made their job easier and don't even know it!

Using more than all the road!

There was a dystopian novel by Dave Eggers - The Circle I think? - that presented the trade-off between safety and privacy very starkly.

In that book, the beginning of it all was when "anonymous" profiles on the internet were banned, which resulted in almost a complete end to internet trolling. Which would be a good thing right? But no option of anonymity, not so good for those of us who don't want the whole world to know we're on Ay FF and Fetlife, ha.

somewhere recently I read that Mark Zuckerburg puts tape over his laptop camera.....I don't have confirmation that it is true, but after watching a 60 Minutes episode a month or two ago on how easy it is for hackers, and of course, government agencies, to monitor both voice and camera data (from both puter and phone cameras), it's depressing to realize how much we are being monitored. Those faceless mid level managers in unknown government offices and corporate security departments are monitoring us on the streets, in stores, and of course, online. (Pause while I wave to the security monitor here) Probably one of the reasons I enjoy time off grid in wilderness areas when I can. Off course, there is probably a satellite or two tracking us even there. This is well beyond Hal in 2001: sadly we probably have no idea of how extensive it is.

cripes

where is the camera on my computer. I never use it but i'd like to cover it too.

and I shut my phone locator off when i'm home....my friend told me to do that when I got it to save battery....but now i'm also thinking why would I need them to know where I was anyway unless I was travelling.

sighs.....paranoia is a strange thing......it builds on itself.

A couple years ago I did break down and buy a cell phone. Just a $15 one, nothing fancy.
I only use it for emergencies, like if my car or motorcycle break down. Otherwise, maybe once every couple months for special reasons.
I don't even keep it turned on. I use it so little I only have to charge it every couple months or so. I have to mark it on the calendar so that I don't forget.
Now the computer.... that's a different story.

wickedeasy replies on 8/29/2016 12:35 pm:
I didn't have a cell phone until this past year when my BOD made me get one for work. then they fired me......

so. I still have the phone which is good since my house phone and my TV just went off for 4 days due to some verizon glitch and the first techy who could come is due tomorrow. thank god I had someone who could deal with the computer although not completely as it slides in and out of being functional.

but yeah.........I still use mine mostly for email, FB and this site. tbs, I guess i'm probably screwed and everyone who wants my info has it.

I once was googling images and found a pic of someone from this site. I told them and they complained. taht's why my pics are from the back and nothing nude. who'd want those?

Facebook doing emotional experiments on people without their knowledge is freaking horrible. And they have and do.

Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety. Other women cloy
The appetites they feed, but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies. For vilest things
Become themselves in her, that the holy priests
Bless her when she is riggish. ~~ from Antony & Cleopatra

yanno toady I had fb tell me someone changed my password and I went through the 9 levels of hell to get back on.

I read the Fountainhead while in architecture school. I thought it was very good, although the characters were stretched to their limits in terms of stereotypes. Since I tend to fall on the libertarian side of the fence, I also tend to agree with Ayn Rand that individuals should be allowed to pursue whatever their vision is....although given the nature of humanity, there do need to be checks in place to constrain evil people who would prey on others.
Ah, once again, wickedeasy has prompted many good thoughts here.
Now, back to the aluminum foil.....and calculating the miles.....*S*

I feel the same way you do much of the time. I had to get my first cell phone for work too. Pay phones were disappearing.

(But I hated "The Fountainhead"!)

I'm one of those homes that has a video system keeping an eye out around the house. I don't choose to point my cameras into other peoples property though. So your safe as long as you don't trespass. I don't own a smart phone at the moment though I'm about to get one soon. I was thinking about a new samsung 7 but decided to wait and see if there were any problems with them. I'm glad I waited.
