A dirty book is rarely dusty

I'm not a big fan of internet porn....not that there's anything wrong with that. and as I mention in my profile, if you want to friend me, don't send me a dicpic. it's just TMI.

I can however read salacious books and get very turned on and my Sir, well he could talk me to orgasm but then, his voice was just amazing. and I am highly suggestible and have a fertile imagination.

a lovely blogger from eons ago sent me her marquis de sade books......I treasure her gesture.

it is the mind that is the devil's or the angels' playground. it can sweep you off to places, evoke feelings like no camera or visual I have ever experienced.

when I was young, I would read incessantly and become so lost in a book that my mother would have to shake me to bring me out of it......remind me of the real world, of dinner or bedtime.

and while then I wasn't (at least not always) reading erotica, I was equally engaged with the written word. to have discovered the magic of literature at a young age was a true gift and it carried me through some of the most difficult events and periods or my life. there are authors that I count as my dearest friends although I have never and will never meet them. we have shared moments so profound and so intimate. they changed me, given me hope, lifted me out of despair, showed me truths that I wouldn't have seen had I not opened the covers of their books....

in my house, books are rarely dusty. they are treasured. frequently reached for to find a paragraph that I need to see again, or handed to a friend so they too can know the joy of the words within. sometimes they travel from friend to friend to friend but almost always they return....one came back recently gone almost 7 years. now home again.

"there is no frigate like a book"

what's your favorite book........dirty or otherwise?

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

It's pretty trite I guess, but it's Pride and Prejudice. There have been many books that moved me more, to the point of tears, but P&P is an old friend I can return to again and again.

"an old friend"

that's a lovely turn of phrase and one I so relate to....it's why books are so important and why a kindle (though ever so handy) will never take the place of a book. it's the difference between a telephone call and a real visit...........

I don't think I have a favorite book- I have a lot of favorites. If you were to ask, my most beloved book, maybe "Huckleberry Finn". It's one of my earliest recollections, my mother having read me to sleep with it when I was a small child. It's still effective and still relevant.

Internet porn is made just to get you off, and that's so subjective. They aren't investing heavily in the best thespians, you know, and in fact it looks like a ten year old kid with ADD is the camera operator in a lot of them. You can't think about them too hard or too long- say two minutes- because if you do you can't help but be disgusted by the misogyny and the crudity.

But even good erotic writing is pretty subjective. What works for one person leaves the next one cold. And there's a hell of a lot of really bad written erotica out there!

it's true the erotica is can be as dreadful as the porn.......

Huck Finn....how I longed to be him and take adventures and risk my immortal soul.

I snorked out loud about the ADD camera operator. thanks for the
laughter on this gray day.

For me, the book is "Second Son" by Charles Sailor. An obscure title written in 1979 but it was some years later that I came across it. It got me thinking about religion, extraordinary events, being true to yourself, the dangers of public hysteria, love and living a good life.

I'm a kindle girl these days - so much easier to travel with. And over the years, I've gotten rid of most of my actual books. But I still have several shelves - books that are special to me (The Harry Potter Series, 20+ Robert Heinlein, my alternative medicine books).

I learned to read early and have been smitten all my life. I read every day almost without exception. And I was like you - I would be so far into a book that I would be oblivious to the world around me. So much of what I know is from reading.

As for porn, meh. I love to look at erotic images but the acting in most makes me giggle. But I've come across a few erotic books (Anne RIce's Sleeping Beauty series, for example) that have opened me to exploring new worlds. Ahhh yes....

xoxo

another I haven't heard of , my list is growing - yippee!

porn would make me giggle if I were watching in a group, I daresay - likely from discomfort. but generally I just find it rather boring.

I can't say that I have a favorite book. There are a couple of books on writing, "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg and "On Writing" by Stephen King have helped me out quite a bit. The former book was recommended by a blogger on this site. She left quite a while ago.

I've never been one for reading erotica, not that I can say I've tried. I have picked up a couple of books and leafed through them, none have caught my attention. Most likely because I haven't tried the right books. (I did try to read the first of the 50 Shades books. The writing was painful and I couldn't get through the first chapter.)

I'm in the process of reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami at the moment. It's an interesting story, but mind-numbingly repetitious.

wickedeasy replies on 5/4/2016 10:07 am:
I too thought King's book was a good read. since he's a "gotcha" writer, it would make sense, no?

50 shades was so bad and so poorly written. I gave up on it as well and i'd paid for the damn thing. reminds me of the bridges of Madison county that my book club had selected one month. I read it and I kept thinking.......omg....omg. so when I went to the meeitng I was floored that all the women there LOVED this book. smart women.

I then proceeded to make enemies of everyone as I tore it apart. what fun I had.......

It's unfortunate, but when an author or artist passes, we tend to value them more. This is true for Prince and in the literary words it's true for Pat Conroy.

I don't know if it counts for a favorite book but my favorite romantic book is "Prince of Tides"

My first love will always be A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle. But a favorite...too many to name. I have go to authors and strangely, when life bogs down, I reach for a silly romance author, Jennifer Cruisie. For some reason, when my mind needs a rest, her books, short and silly, can get me there. I often have two or three books going at once. Something deep or thoughtful like, White House Diary: Jimmy Carter ( I wish all presidents did this) or a good biography, a non fiction or historical like, Rise of the Rocket Girls
The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars
by Nathalia Holt and finally, something quick and silly. One of my new favorite quick silly books is Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple.. I have read it three times and given away four copies. Some times a book will get into you and beckon to you, even after you have read it.
There is one book I have given away at least 100 times. When I find used copies, I buy them. Yet I never seem to be able to keep it in my house. I have read it many times. The Four Agreements is probably the book that most changed my life.
As for porn. I love a good erotic novel. The one that opened my world sexually, well, there are actually two; Fear Of Flying by Erica Jong and Exit to Eden by Anne Rampling (Rice).
In answering your question, I have found, there is no simple answer and I have written a book!

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

OMG - I read a wrinkle in time. I have asked thousands of people if they knew this book.........lol. it was one of those books that changed me as a teen.

maybe I should have asked what is erotic instead? snork

Too many good books to have a favorite. A couple of recent reads that I enjoyed immensely: Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, and Long Distance, a year of living strenuously by Bill McKibben. Totally different, both I found very moving and thoughtful.

Wrinkle in Time was / is a great book.

Erotic is usually the last thing one will find in porn.

I don't know that I could ever choose a favorite. I have more books than I could ever read again. Even though I own a Nook, my hands and eyes still prefer to hold a book.
The other thing is, I can recycle books. Sell them. Donate them. Sharing them.
