Retirement plan
Retirement plan Many companies don't have a retirement plan anymore. I heard if you do 20 years in the military, you have to wait to the age of 60 to get your retirement. That sucks. My neighbor had a friend, this guy was smart! He had a lot of wisdom. He said, after highscool he joined the military, while he was in he got a college degree and became an officer. So as he was eligible to retire, he did. He retired after 20 years, left the Marines and joined the Navy, at the age of 38. So when he was 58, he gotten two retirements. He then got a civil service job and at 66, he got a retiremnt from them and he was eligible to get his social security. He's debt free, his house is also paided off, and his income is over $8000 a month take home. this is some good advice for the younger people. There are jobs that still have retirement! The VA hospital, DOE (Department of Energy), DOD (Department of defense) and our school system still have retirement. i'm retired, but I should had retired from the military. I could had double dipped. i would have two retirement. So, if you work at a company that has a retirement, after 5 years you vested. You can just do the 5 years, you don't need to do 20 years. I knew a guy 60 that got hired, did 5 years, retired and got a little plus social security. There are many who already established, but if not, find out who got a retirement, do another 5 years, get vested and get that check! Go back to work, then retired, and get that !!!! |

Good advice, but I do think that there might be some partially incorrect information in the post regarding some of the details. Just make sure that you check out the situation before you "retire" from a government job. I know that there is a Social Security rule about reductions if you worked a government job not covered by SS and then worked for 10 years after in order to qualify for SS. The smart thing to do for your entire life is to live on less than you make. Do not borrow to buy anything other than your home. And only buy a house if the payment is about 25% of youir take home pay. Total Money Makeover is a good starting point.

Scoupe I served 14 years in the British Royal Air Force, they now give a pension at 60 for minimum 12 years service. Sadly that came in after I left, and wasn't back dated However I then went to work company that went on to become part of Airbus, I did 35 years with them! Retirement is wonderful Please visit my Blog "Older but no Wiser"

I'm what you call a 'late bloomer#39; it wasn't until my 3rd career did I get a job with a pension. So now I have to be at least 62 before I can retire even though I'm ready now. Maybe not ready to retire completely, but ready to leave this business where I am burnt out but stuck. I monitor my potential retirement income and it starts going up sharply per year in a few years, so I'm hoping to stick it out.
