What ARE They Thinking? (or ARE They Thinking?)

What ARE They Thinking? (or ARE They Thinking?)

Drivers in San Antonio are bad. Sober or drunk, it is the same thing. No one else exists in the world or they live in a dream world of entitlement. It is lunacy. I wonder if everyone else views it the same way.

Texas driving laws state that, when a driver is entering the freeway, they must merge into the freeway traffic where it is safe and without impeding the progress of traffic. In San Antonio, the reverse seems to be the case. Those entering the freeway seem to take an entitlement mentality, that they somehow have the right of way regardless of how fast or slow they are going or if their entry onto the freeway where they WILL enter the freeway could result in a fatality if the freeway traffic isn't aware of this overwhelming lunacy. Oncoming traffic believes that they are entitled to enter the freeway between each successive car, regardless of whether they had to speed up to pass the car they are about to merge in front of to do so. They never just proceed and let two cars pass before bunging themselves into the fray.

Texas driving law states that, when a driver's lane is ending and the driver must merge into the continuing lane, they are meant to do so without abridging the right of way of the traffic in the continuing lane. In San Antonio, the drivers in the lane that ends in three inches will push all the way up that last remaining three inches to assure that they are able to get into the lane they are meant to merge with but in a one for one fashion as well. They seem to be of the understanding that the lane that is ending is not, in fact, merging alone but that both lanes are equally responsible for assuring that the closing lane moves more freely than the one continuing.

Texas driving law states that, when you turn from the right hand lane of two lanes onto a road that goes in one direction, the furthest left lane is not a lane that you are allowed to turn into while traffic is turning from the left hand lane. In San Antonio, people will turn into all four lanes of the feeder road from the right turn lane and hurl profanities at the person who has the nerve to follow the rules of the road.

This is Fiesta Week in San Antonio. The bad drivers are not only angrily ignorant of the rules of the road, but they are belligerently drunk while doing so. I am of two minds this extended week (my understanding is that it lasts ten days... further proof that people here don't understand simple concepts, like the rules of the road or a week) of debauchery. People generally drive worse when they are impaired through excessive alcohol consumption. The thing I ponder is whether that would also be reversed in the San Antonio driver. Perhaps the San Antonio driver forgets its bad driving habits and follows the road rules that most people find instinctual?

I'll hazard a guess that San Antonio drivers will find a way to be worse still than they have been. No more driving for me than absolutely necessary, unless it gets me out of the area and harm's way.

I have driven in 13 eastern and gulf states; the worst drivers I have seen, in all the states I have driven, is in Southeast Florida.

I lived in the Ft. Lauderdale area for 9 years and rarely seen any common courtesy on the road.

One time I took a helper to Ft. Myers and he said he could really see the difference of the drivers outside of Miami; I told him this is how people normally drive, meaning outside of SE Fla.

Another time, in one day, I had to drive from Miami, to Sarasota, to Tampa, to Orlando, to Daytona, to Jacksonville, back to Orlando, to Sarasota, and then back home to Pompano Bch.; in all those miles, I was almost in 5 fender benders, all in Miami & Ft. Laud.

My ex is from the Ft. Lauderdale area; I had to teach her how to drive like a normal driver when we moved to Ft. Myers.

Smart as a rock, strong as a marshmallow, and hung like a flea. Now, don't that make me sexy?

Oh man, Deb..

I can tell you. . I usually drive white knuckled and angry at the world. There's a reason i don't carry a gun cause i would be flashing the gun like a lighter during a rock ballad just to merge.
This town sees a blinker and immediately closes the gap to prevent you from doing so.
San Antonio drivers just make me want to flip over a table.. if they're not cutting you off, then they're slamming on the brakes after you've given them the room to merge.
I love reading your blog on the way home from the office though.. this just makes that annoying traffic on 410 seem like a distant memory..
Oh look, cops are behind me yelling something on the bullhorn.. brb.
