Sympathy Discussing a sad divorce situation with a 20 year old, who thought the tragedy was funny. I realized some young people lack sympathy for strangers. If you know the persons involved, you feel their pain. But outside a family or friend relationship it is easy to judge harshly and decry the sinners for sinning. Yet we all sin, big or small. That reality the Christians got right... So can you feel for those you do not know and love? We are supposed to love strangers and even enemies.... How many actually do? Jesus was a hard act to follow... |

So, are you asking about empathy? I can understand and commiserate with someone I don't know. I think that a lot of young people can, too. It is something that for most people comes easier with age. I ask for some concern for others, including strangers and those in distant lands. Refugees and those who face disasters. George Carlin had a funny routine about people who care about the unborn child but don't care at all about poor children who are born. the Trump budget is a good example of what not to do to help others. Some young people are too smug for my taste as they can be judgmental.
