Munnar hotel murder: husband killed wife suspecting fidelity

The mysterious murderer of a 25-year-old woman, Shyamala, in a hotel in Munnar in Kerala, turned out to be her husband, who suspected her fidelity. After killing his wife, Maheshkumar, fled the scene and allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a tree at his native village in Erode district of Tamil Nadu last night.

Shyamala, who hails from Madurai and was living with her husband at Mambalam in Chennai, had gone on a pleasure trip to Munnar with her husband, where she was found dead in their hotel room on October 10. Even as police suspected the involvement of Mahesh and launched a dragnet for him, he returned to his native village at Pattimaniakkaran Palayam near Gobichetty Palayam in Erode district and committed suicide last night.

Leaving behind a four-page suicide note, he ended his life by hanging from a tree behind his house, police said. Meanwhile, the Kottayam Police, after a post-mortem, handed over Shyamala to her parents, who had reached Munnar after seeing the photograph of their murdered in the media. A report from Erode, quoting police, said Maheshkumar left behind a four page suicide note, using a computer and 20 page of different letters to the family members in a note book before taking the extreme step.

He confessed in the letter that he stabbed his wife to death as she continued her relations with her boy friends, atleast six of them, despite his repeated warnings. Maheshkumar said in the letter that he married Shyamala after falling in love with her about five years back. They had no issues and were living in Kodambakkam in the city. He said Shyamala, who worked in a computer firm, had many boy friends and was frequently receiving SMS and calls from her boy friends in general and six of them in particular.

She was also frequently chatting with them on face book, he said adding, even after his repeated warnings, Shyamala continued her friendship with them. Suspecting her fidelity, Maheshkumar often quarreled with her and a few months back the couple even took the issue to the police station. As advised by the police, they had approached a family court, seeking divorce and started living separately. However, when Shyamala called him over phone last month and expressed regret for her acts, and suggested that they start afresh and live together, Maheshkumar took her back, saying "let's forget the past" A week after they started living together, the couple planned the trip to Munnar. While staying with her husband in the lodge, Shyamla again got a call from one of her friends and also received messages.

On seeing this, Maheshkumar became furious and stabbed her to death using a knife. After committing the crime, he left Munnar in a two-wheeler and visited several places in the last four days, before reaching his native village. On reaching his native place yesterday, he tried to committ suicide by slashing his wrist with the same knife he had used to kill his wife. As it was taking time, he went to the field at the back of the house and hanged himself, police said. In his letter to the, police, Maheshkumar gave the mobile numbers of all her wife’s friends and wanted police to take action againnt them. He said in the letter that because of his wife’s friends, he had to kill his wife and take the extreme step.He wanted to take revenge on her friends, whom he searched for in Chennai. He then returned home and committed suicide
