I think the bible is one giant folk tale with rules and guidelines for how to not be a crappy person. Think about it. In those days only clergy knew how to read and how do you tell a creation story to the uneducated masses? You use 7 days instead of millions of years. It has been a game of "telephone" with each subesequent version of the bible. The Greek Orthodox version is probably the closest to the original bible. Are there grains of truth and fact in there? Maybe.

I once had a debate involving the bible. He was using it as a justification and a literal telling of things that had happened. Got around to one point that he also said, "it's more like a collection of fables", at which point, he had to admit that there's no reason to treat it as anything literal, but, rather, an interesting ready with some good life lessons.

Also, the Old Testament was an oral tradition before it was ever written, so who knows what it was at first? Ancient Greek and Aramaic texts still exist, the original writings, but, again, knowing what they say is still a matter of interpretation and translation.

A little more to say. There's this common attitude that god will do things for you, that it actually acts upon this world. That negates free will. The WHOLE point of faith is you know without proof. Rewards, given by god, would be proof. You're Xtianity is pretty explicit that there is no reward on earth for the faith. The concept of free will is pretty damn central. Our ability to CHOOSE is what makes belief such a prize.
