Do You Practice What You Preach?

Do You Practice What You Preach?

Observers of human behavior have noticed that people often make moral claims that they cannot live up to. There are countless examples of scandals involving religious and political leaders who talk publicly about living up to high moral standards, but whose personal lives do not measure up.

Recently, I came across an example of this. Driving home from work the other day, I glanced over at the vehicle in the lane next to mine, a Toyota Prius. As we know, Prius owners typically are thought to be environmentally conscious individuals. I found it amusing that the owner of this Prius took things a step further by sporting a personalized license plate stating, "IMGREEN." Okay. I get it. You want everyone to know that you are environmentally responsible.

As I passed the vehicle, I glanced over and was surprised to observe the owner's dry cleaning garments hanging in the back driver's side window. Hold the phone! Last time I checked, dry cleaners used toxic chemicals that pollute and are harmful to the environment! So much for being "Green."

So, this led me to think, do you make claims to be a devout ____________ (fill in the blank here.) Have you made consessions that go against these ideals? Curious minds want to know! Happy Friday and have a good weekend!

You've pulled a true confession from me, my dear. I let on that I am a devout video game player, but in reality I've hardly touched one in years.

Again- another confession! I seriously wasn't asking for confessions! That being said, thanks for sharing.

When leading, being mentors to co-workers, sons, people and things, always try to teach the best practices, safety always first and lead by good standards and thoughts. And do try to follow these things also, but find at times cutting corners or that little white lie and things. Definitely - No one is perfect and in general most people do try to the right thing and lead by example - and hopefully just like everything else - continue to get better at it and make other people better at it also!!!

Cutting corners can be good if it improves things.

I avoid this by preaching the opposite of moral and ethical piety.

Smart as a horse and hung like Einstein.

I usually drive 5 miles over the speed limit... yes I know I am speeding... but, I always chuckle every time someone driving a Prius rapidly overtakes and passes me... only to be at the stoplight ahead as I pull along side them

I get what you are saying.... "do as I say not as I do". There are plenty of examples of that.

I'm not sure what it's like where you live, but here in the greater Toronto area, we have environmentally friendly dry cleaners. So....

Find pleasure in giving pleasure

Many, many, many preaching and practicing otherwise. Only one is a moral thing I think. The rest are just "do as I say, not as I do....until you understand what is going on."

Other than the whole "sex with random strangers" thing. lol

I can be a little more bold than the others and say that I do have devout beliefs about some things. However actually practicing those beliefs is like the word implies. It's just "practice". Sometimes I have bad days but my beliefs keep bringing me back for more practice.

As far as preaching goes, I can honestly say I practice what I preach but only because I preach only things that are very simple and basic and that any unmotivated beginner can do. For example, I'm serious about my health but my advice to others trying to get in shape might just be to enjoy getting outside for a bit and taking a walk.

Some people go a little further and put a public label on themselves like "IMGREEN". Kind of phony and narcissistic, if you want to go with my first impression. He's willing to put his beliefs out there for public scrutiny though so that's something I can not judge.

I do not see a need to boast; I let my actions speak for me.

Smart as a rock, strong as a marshmallow, and hung like a flea. Now, don't that make me sexy?
